Paid for item with Paypal, they want card details for refund - do I have to give them

Hi,

Would be grateful for advice.

I purchased an item of clothing from a website and paid through Paypal (not bought from Ebay). I didn't wear the item for a couple of months, then when I wore it and washed it 3 times it went very bobbly and was obviously very poor quality (cost £30). I emailed them and they said return it and they would refund.

Now they say because it is over 60 days they cannot refund to Paypal and want my card details. I don't want to supply card details - that's why I used Paypal in the first place! Can they do this? I am prepared to give them bank details or accept a cheque if necessary but am not giving card details over the phone.

Thanks for any advice!

Personally i wouldn't but with paypal you only get 45 days to file a dispute.

Maybe worth a call to paypal? Is it a big company or a faceless online shop?

  • Perhaps they can't refund your money using paypal but can't they simply make a oneoff payment to you using your paypal details?

The only down side to that is you would lose some of the refund due to paypal charges.

Have you any specific reason why you won't give your card details over the phone? Perhaps you could give them the details and then phone the CC company and say you've lost it so will be issued with a new one.

Thanks. They say their system doesn't let them do this!

How about asking them to send a cheque?

Failing that, just provide your details if you are a legit company.
