You can get SP2 through windows updates.

    umm...

a rattling sound, could you bit a bit more specific, is it like a clunking sound, or just a rattle?

To me it sounds like SP2 is not your problem, from the outward signs I'd say either somethings corrupting your hard disk, or the rattling sound is the death wheeze of your hard disk.

run chkdsk /f from a command prompt if you can, if you cant get that far I'd advise a format and a reinstall.

does sounds hardware related, follow the chkdsk advice above and see what it reports

Even if it turns out not to be a hardware problem it doesn't sound like anything that would be sorted by simply re installing sp2. I personally would do a complete reinstall of xp. But a rattling noise from the computer is definitely hardware.
