Channel Islands and credit card

Options
Are there any charges for using a credit card in the Channel Islands or is it just the same as using one in the UK?

Same with withdrawing money from an ATM using a debit card?

It should be as if you were making the transactions at home.

    No additional charges.

Don't they still spend pounds, shillings and old pence there ;)
  • Mind you, slightly off topic, it does count as 'abroad' for mobile phone purposes.

Most phone providers charge 'trunk rate' for calls, it's more expensive than home turf calls but not full roaming charges.
And you still get pound notes, love it! Apart from on a Sunday morning when your purse feels really heavy but you've only got £6 left

There was another thread on this a little while ago, specifically related to Jersey.

I remember someone pointing out that Natwest debit cards count Jersey as "abroad", even if you use a Natwest ATM!

Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Gibraltar are all exactly the same as UK although Barclays play a really good trick in Gibraltar which they may also try in the Channel Islands if they have their own sterling banknotes. In Gibraltar, if you withdraw cash from NatWest or Norwich and Peterborough ATM's or make purchases in any shop the transactions go through as normal UK transactions; no foriegn charges. Barclays however have two ATM's. One dispenses Bank Of England sterling notes and one dispenses Government of Gibraltar sterling notes. If you use the second machine, the charge will be debited in GIP (exchange rate GIP1.00=GBP1.00) rather than GBP and you will incur a foriegn transaction charge.
