Why won't LA allow daughter on tenancy agreement

    Have read with interest the replies and have done some investigating of my own. I have found between LA & direct.gov.uk websites Assignment of tenancy:
    Joint tenants can be A) A married couple. B) a civil partnership C) co-habiting D)A FAMILY MEMBER
    However the latter one has to be agreed by the local authority and must have lived with tenant for a minimum of 12 months. I will phone my LA tomorrow and quote their website and see what happens will let you know.

    I checked the housing act 1995? i think it was just put assignment of tenancy into the direct gov website. I stand to be corrected if i am wrong. Thanks for comments though.

    There are rules about how many times someone can be added - if one person has already in the past that might have been it.

    No-one has been added i took my name off a good few years ago but no one has ever been added he has been a council tenant for over 20 years and only moved last year but i am going to check with them tomorrow as it might be 12 months in the current house. Which is next week.......We will see.

    Yeah still in same area and still within same local authority. I rang today and they are sending a form out to our daughter, assignment of tenancy is at the local authority discretion but as daughter is currently registered to bid for properties and doesnt have an asbo etc there "should not be a problem" will let all know when they decide.

    Rather than pulling all rental property security down to the lowest denominator, why not pull the lowest UP? Repeal S21 and everybody who rents privately would enjoy a bit of added security. Wouldn't that be a more positive outcome?

    Realistically, though, if you own a house and decide to rent it out, surely you should have the option to take it back if you want to sell/live in it again at some point in the future, upon giving reasonable notice?

    RE social housing, I think it should be more of a safety net for people who need it, and less of a lifestyle choice to rent a place at a considerably reduced rate despite the fact that you can be earning a decent salary and have BMWs parked on the drive etc.
