after christmas I think they dropped the price down to like £12.99 or some thing.
Either lidl or aldi did. I just had a little freezer at the time and 4kg goose to much for two people.0 -
The M&S ones were around £45 prepared & ready to cook. A fresh one from the butcher will be around £30-£40 depending on weight. Always used to get the butcher to bone mine then I could separate out the fat and render it down for presents and roast tatties and not have to constantly be draining the fat off.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Just steer well clear of the ones from Tesco! I paid nearly £30 for a fresh tesco goose the Christmas before last and it was dreadful. I'm a fairly good cook and it was prepared properly but , apart from the vast quantities of goose fat, it was one hell of a lot of bone and very little meat. I know goose and duck have a high bone to meat ratio but I certainly expected to be able to feed my DH and me (there were just 2 of us that year) for at least 2 meals each plus maybe a bit left for a sandwich.
In fact I struggle to get enough decent meat off for just Christmas Day lunch for the 2 of us - and the mass of bones went stright into the dustbin. Good job I did plenty of veg and trimmings otherwise this would have been the first Christmas Dinner where I was still hungry!
I'm not sure what went wrong but, judging by the speed at which Tesco refunded me the full price, I suspect I wasn't the only cross customer. Several friends have said that Aldi and Lidl frozen geese are fairly foolproof but the disappointment has put me right of buying a goose ever again. Shame really - I only got one because my DH has always had fond memories of old fashioned Christmases with a goose and I wanted to surprise him. There is a fine line between surprise and shock !ELITE 5:2

We had a Goose from our local butcher last year it was about £45 and really nice. Fed 6 of us with none left over!0

All the geese in the major supermarkets are supplied by the same food company (I used to work for them), the same goes for bronze turkeys - the birds are EXACTLY the same, just the price and packaging that is different.
However Aldi and Lidl source products from different suppliers and will no doubt be cheaper.
I would say the average goose would only serve 3-4 people - the serving size is normally based on less than 100g of meat each - as if you're going to pay that much and then eat such a small amount!0 -
We got one from Aldi 3 weeks ago for around £6.99 was a good size too!0

Hi Alison
I'm not sure about M&S but Waitrose currently sell frozen Norfolk goose for £45. I think it comes in one size - 'medium' (which, if I remember rightly, is 4.5kg). Generally speaking, British goose seems to sell online for £10-£13 per kg. It's a bigger product in Eastern Europe and as a result they have a much larger goose industry. This allows supermarkets like Lidl and Aldi to import and sell it at much much lower prices than the British equivalent.
I actually run The Hebridean Goose Co. which Seakay kindly provided a link to above (Thanks!) and - cue plug - our 2011 Christmas geese range from £42.00 to £58.00.

I think you will find that was duck for that price not a goose
Aldi have frozen geese in from 30th Nov 2011 for £19.99, as do Lidl but thiers currently reduced to £17.99 (but for how long???)
PS If a bucher or local farmer can do it for that price I'll have one0 -

wow, you can remember the prices and everything they sold in in Aldi nearly 4 months ago, have you ever thought of counting cards0 -
you dont need to remember prices from Aldi - they have a website and a leaflet which is really handy!
I remember that the goose I had from Aldi the year before last was £16.99 cos I couldnt believe the price! it was the same size as the turkey I had ordered from a local butcher - but was half the price!
last year I bought Aldis Turkey Crown and a couple of their beef joints.
This year I see they are having Fresh Meat in - I will prob buy that.0
