Best Bank Account for me

Options
Hi,
Today my last default has finally come off all my Credit Files. I now have a faultless Credit History going back 6 Years. However I have a joint Easycash account with my OH who has real bad credit so i am financialy linked with her (on experian only).

My question is, i would now like to get a "proper" Current account in my sole name, does anybody have an idea which Bank would look favourably on me. Halifax declined me and i don't want to keep trying different providers only to keep getting refused.

Does anybody have experience of being in a similar situation.

Thanks in advance for any Help and advice.

If your OH has bad credit, you will find it very difficult to get an account while you are financially linked to her, and most banks search experian when applying for a bank account. You could try and Natwest and HSBC who also search equifax, as well as experian, but to be honest, I think your best bet is to close your joint account, and file a notice of disassociation with the CRAs, then try again

May seem obvious to you but why?

OK, its often much harder to get an "upgrade" with a bank you have a Basic account with because the internal "low status" of Basic trumps your "conduct", than to get accepted by a different bank.

You might as well try for a "free" full service account, for example Select with Natwest/RBS. They can only say no. I strongly recommend you do not ask for an overdraft(for the moment) even if that is the reason you want a full service account.

Be aware that the potential downside of a "full service" account is unauthorised overdraft charges of £6/day. Is that *really* what you want?

I guess i just want to go to the next step of having a Full Service account. I would not need an OD so would not request One.

Im Happy with the Easy Cash account, the only problem with that is that it does not report to any Credit Ref agency. I have not had a problem getting a couple of Credit Cards both OK limits and a loan, in the past couple of years either. In 2-3 years i would like to apply for a mortgage (saving for the deposit at the moment and the OH's Credit File will be clear then too) and i have been told that it would be highly unlikely to get a Mortgage without a Full Service Bank account.
  • Well.........just applied for the HSBC Current account online and was accepted.

    Very Happy.
