The thing that shocks me is that there is someone out there aware enough and capable enough to try and stop the scammers...

To the OP: I suggest that you discard the email address that you received this email from as it is obviously in a spammer's database (and if it's in one, it'll be in lots!) and start a new email address

You only need to do that if you get buried in spam.

My hotmail id must be on some US based list as I receive occasional spam emails. Most go straight to my junk folder.

I have used the same hotmail id for years and see no reason to change it because I only get one or two spam emails per day at most. Maybe I am lucky.

You should have two email addresses anyway. One for personal mail and one for when you have to fill in a form etc when there is a chance that your details might get sold on. If that gets spammed to death no big deal, get another one.

I have one with my name and another the same with a number on the end
    ie johnsmith@hotmail.com & johnsmith1@hotmail.com Easy to remember.

And, if the real johnsmith@hotmail is reading this, he now knows who to blame, Sparky. ;)

If you received a message claiming to be from an ebay member and inquiring about an item - DO NOT RESPOND TO THE NOTICE!
Seems pretty simple to me. Delete email and log into ebay as normal.
    Happy chappy
