Hi, i am not sure if this is the right forum and my apologies if not anyhow. I have been renting my house for 14months now and discovered my boiler is faulty 3months ago and been costing me the earth in electric on average £140 and now average cost is £50. I live on my own so don't use much electric and have no gas. The problem is do i ask my landlady for refund due to faulty boiler and not my fault? As over 14months this is alot of money. She is really nice and understanding esp when i had finantial difficulties at beginning of year and don't wish to distroy this.

Edit: should state that this is total heating total control house in which boiler on lower rate from normal electric products

Where is the heat going? If in a month you have used £140 of electric your house would be very warm. Turn it off.

My heating been off since beginning of March the boiler only on at very low rate and heats up water over night as this cheaper than using the booster switch. I prob should be more clearer the fault was it was switched on using up electric but wasnt heating up the water

It was heating something though. The electric will be converted to heat. If my electric immersion becomes faulty it will be heating the water to a higher temperature than it would otherwise. If it overheats then the safety cut out will trip and use no electricity till the reset button is pressed.

If the boiler was using £140 a month in Dec, Jan, and Feb then that's quite normal. What was the fault with it?

You have either used the electric or you haven't. If it hasn't heated up the water (as the boiler had failed) then you haven't been using it or you have been using it for something else. Its not like a tap where it runs away to nothing.

As for the rest of your post and not wanting to put a downer on it but you have a responsibility to inform your LL asap if anything like a boiler needs repairing. Otherwise how are they to know? Yes your LL has a responsibility to repair the boiler asap but as for bearing the additional costs incurred for not repairing it promptly it looks like you will have to bear that.

Sorry if im not making myself clear enough. My electric bill was on average £140 between March and May no heating on and the boiler was on but wasnt heating up water. The boiler has two elements to heat it up with two switches connected to each one i only need one switch on to heat up one element to heat up water which is all i need as i live on my own. I did inform my landlady about this (as soon as i found out it wasnt working properly) and they informed me that both switches should work but the switch i was using wasnt heating up water i turned that switch off and used the other switch instead which seems to be working fine now. I got bill after i changed switches and between June and August my bill on average was £50 month.
