Advice on training grant

Hi MSE,
Ive just found out today, I'm due to be made redundant from my current job where I've been for 5yrs (since college). I have been in the job whilst gaining a 2:2 degree in BSc Computer Studies. I graduated last year, and have been looking for the last year to try get a career in the field of my degree, however there is nothing that has cropped up at all

This has made me feel that i should take full advantage of the re-training grant on offer by my current employer. I have a £2,000 training grant, which allows me to undertake as many courses as I like up to the value of £2k.

I originally considered doing a Driving Instructors course, however after reading several threads, and considering the constant rise in the price of fuel, it seems like a business whereby a decent yearly salary is constantly on the downfall.

I would prefer to try gain some form of re-training to allow me to be self-employed, however any career change with the prospect of a respectable yearly salary would be ideal.

In the light of all the redunancy my head is all over the place, and i just need someone from MSE to show me some light and give me some ideas :A

Thanks,
xBuNn

Take your time, check how long you have to spend the money and make sure you know what you want to do.

I have a year to spend the money, however, with bills etc. that need paying monthly, ideally i would like to re-train as soon as possible. Otherwise it would mean trying to find a job simply as a stop-gap for a few months, which i feel is unfair on the employer.

I would ideally like to be able to go into property development in the future, and feel that having a trade and being self-employed would give me a great benefit in achieving this goal.

I have considered retraining as an electrician, but i just need some ideas of alternatives. The more ideas i am fed, then i may be able to try narrow down my career options

OK, you have a direction in mind - and an idea of a way forward. This is what you should set about investigating. On your first post, I could have said 'concert pianist' for lack of clues.

Now take your time to investigate becoming an electrician. Don't go straight to commercial course providers, who will only drool at your training pot and try and sell you their course. Instead, find out what training you need to be able to make a living. Would you need Part P registration? What other qualifications and accreditations would you need an how could you get them? Could you get an income going with some training and then step into employment for a few years while you complete your programme?

I have looked into several different electricians courses, however I just wanted to ask the board if they have any suggestions for a career move. I feel like i am infront of a brick wall in terms of moving forward, I don't have any ideas on what would be best for a long-term career move bearing in mind my inspiration of wanting to eventually be self-employed and in-turn get into property development.

I have also considered trying to get into the property industry either through Property Surveying, or Estate Agents, something in the property sector interests me alot.

Is there any access ways into Property Surveying? How would one go about getting a foot into any form of property employment?

Yes I drive, full clean license for 5yrs. I don't like the idea of HGV driving, as its long hours away from home.

I am wanting to try get into the property sector, so i have as much experience as possible for when i start to build a portfolio of properties.
