About to claim back my overdraft charges - where should I go?

I am about to write to the bank and get my overdraft charges back. I can't believe this is possible! This site is amazing!

I would just like to ask you all where you think the best place to open a new account is right now? There's quite a few forums here, so I'm unsure this is the right one to post in about this. I hope it is.

Anyway my account is usually overdrawn by an average of £1,500. If they close my account, obviously I presume I would have to pay this off. But I would want this facility in my new account, at the lowest rate possible. And I'd want the best interest rate for when I'm in credit obviously...

Any ideas everyone? I'm a newb so please be gentle...

Massive thanks in advance :)

  • Only a ‘full’ bank account (not a basic one), gives you the ability to be overdrawn. To open this, you need a good credit rating. To have an overdraft of 1500 quid, right from the start, you need a excellent credit rating. Any bank will open an account for someone with an excellent credit rating.

If you had frequent charges (‘penalty charges’ for going over the limit), you credit rating might be a bit tarnished. You better check your file with the agencies, before you apply anywhere.

Why don't you open a new account in advance of applying for the old one's charges to be refunded? That way you will know what your overdraft limit will be. Personally we use Nationwide as the overdraft charges (for our approved overdraft) was half that of the HSBC and the overdraft was more. Also the credit interest from Nationwide was much more generous. Have a look around, there are probably even better ones than that!

You haven't mentioned who your old account is with....
  • Hi Everyone, I'm looking to claim my bank charges back from my Lloyds Tsb Account which i have held for about 15 years, i started my own business up 2 & half years ago & it has been a struggle, i have been constantly in my overdraft for this peroid, the balance was £1,500. last month i managed to pay off £750 & i have now recieved a letter from Lloyds stating that if i dont pay the remaining balance asap, they will take me to court..

What i want to know is if i can borrow the money from my parents & clear the overdraft, can i still then go ahead & claim the bank charges from the past 2 years... ? ?

Would be grateful if any one could give me some advice on this, as the money would come in very useful for my business...

    Thanks.
