Question about entitlement to ride a motorbike?
Options
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knew what the rules where for riding motorbikes?
I passed my full car driving licence in 1989 and drove a moped for a few years till I could afford a car (which I now have). I was hoping to get a moped or perhaps a motorbike but I dont know if I can legally ride either of these on a driving licence? I imagine I would have to pass a CBT but would I need to retake it every two years and after that pass a full motorbike test?
I tried to look on the DVLA site but it was very confusing, can someone clear this up for me?
Many thanks.

You have to take the full test within 2 years, otherwise you have to take a year off (I think) before you can reapply. Your full car licence will allow you to ride up to 125cc on L plates, if you have passed your CBT.

Take the test and get a full licence. My husband was in this position years ago, then you could even ride a bike up to 250cc on L plates, even so he started with a moped.
He decided to take the test,so i could ride pillion and over the years moved up to a 900cc,even though he had a car too.Bikes have given us many years of fun:D .There are two sides to every story.

I didnt want to take a test really, I thought I could ride a moped indefinitely like I used to 20 years ago!

A quick Google shows that if you passed your car test before 2001,then that acts as a provisional licence for a moped for as long as the car licence is valid. No need to do CBT, but recommended.0

I agree this is most confusing, however THIS link shows that as you passed your car test pre 2001, you can ride a moped WITHOUT "L" plates, you also don't need to take your CBT but it is recommended.
My son passed his car test last year and had taken his CBT a year before that, I have an e-mail from the DVLA stating that : he can now ride a moped without "L" plates, carry a pillion passenger and also that his CBT will never expire.0 -
Thanks a lot for the link, so if I got my CBT then would I be able to ride a 125cc with a pillion passenger?Old Faithful we roam the range together,
