Adjust number of rings before BT VoiceMail answers

Hi there folks,

This is CanadaMan writing from.......well Canada! I'm seeking help with BT's voicemail system in the UK.

I call my elderly Aunt in the UK every day at a prearranged time to say Hi and to make sure that she's OK.

I'm not sure what the service is called but she has the standard residential answering system that's in the phone system where she calls a certain number and listens to the messages. She cannot call me back because she's blind and cannot read my number that is on the wall in her hall in case of emergencies, and it's too long for her to remember!

Sometimes she has a hard time getting to the phone before the voice mail answers, however, I always leave a message and tell her that I'll call her back again 5-10 minutes later.

To save her from breaking her neck dashing to the phone she and I were wondering if there is any way to adjust the number of rings before the voicemail kicks in?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from Canada,

If it is the standard free BT Answer 1571 then there is no option to change the amount of rings before answer. Only BT Call minder offers this option but that costs £3.00 a month so probably not worth it just for that feature. Maybe best to buy an answer phone handset that has adjustable rings and cancel the 1571 service.

Is there no family member in the UK who could set up a cordless phone system for her? £20 or so would fund one.

She could use a belt clip to attach a handset to her clothing whenever she is dressed and thus eliminate the dash for the fixed phone.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Hello "syko29793" and "Heinz". Thanks for the responses, they are much appreciated. If the BT answer system cannot be easily adjusted then as you suggest Heinz, it may be a good idea to try the cordless phone option. I'll broach it with her today.:)
