Does anyone know where you can purchase a version of windows 7 cheaply?

Unfortunately operating systems tend to hold their value and even XP is difficult to get 'cheap'.... see what they're STILL going for on ebay.
One good bet for minimising the price is to make sure you get the RETAIL edition (upgrade or full, NOT oem, NOT one with 'windows anytime upgrade' or WAU anywhere on the packet).
The good thing with RETAIL licenses is when you are finished with them you can legally sell them on on ebay and usually get 60%-75% of your money back.
NB there is nothing different between the full and upgrade versions that two short commands during clean install can't workaround....

Yes, because you do a 'clean' install, i.e. all traces of previous operating system are erased, Win 7 is then installed.
The same method (upgrade disk) can be used to install Win7 onto a brand new hard drive.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
