Asda charging for carrier bags?

Just read a comment on Sainsbury's Facebook page, not sure if it's true or not. I haven't heard of this & I work there!

As from the 5th October, Sainsbury's are doing away with the free orange bags, and you'll be able to take your shopping home in the bags for life bags. This is because there are too many plastic bags littering our seas and countrysides, causing un-repairable damage to the enviroment. A bag for life will see you take endless shopping home, and if it breaks, it will be replaced for free. This is something that should have been brought in years ago.

Even Fiends of the Earth don't believe that twaddle about carrier bags. It's just more, boring, Green hysteria.
The world isn't littered with plastic carrier bags. Most get reused in place of other plastic packaging materials like bin liners and bags. They use a minute amount of resources to make. Paper is not, essentially, any more 'environmentally friendly' (ever seen a paper mill at work?).
Of course, the supermarkets are happy to encourage this nonsense. They save millions on free bags and they get to look virtuous to the hard of thinking. How can they go wrong?0 -
There were signs in my local asda today saying that as of 1st October, all Wales would be charging for carrier bags. Not sure if this applies to other shops as well as asda, it sort of implied it did.0

Here you go, looks like it's all shops.0 -
was in our local Asda tonight, and they had run out of the normal carrier bags, so they were giving away their bags for life for free- usually 6p, one couple had about 7 full bags in their trolley.
but before tonight, i've not been charge for a basic carrier in asda :S0 -
Let's be honest. If Asda wishes to commit commercial suicide it would be no great loss. When WalMart steamed into the UK by buying Asda, it promised a big retail shake-up. All it has achieved has been to drag a second tier chain even further down the slippery slope. All the other supermarkets equal or better Asda on quality - and the Germans (and Morrisons) beat it on price.
So just what is Asda for, any longer?0 -
Dang you spend 50-60 squid on overpriced stuff and quibble about 10 or 20 pence on bags get a grip and deal with it - tescos and morrisons have been rationing bags for ages (to help the enviro) and lidls and aldis charging for ages get over it if you aint eco friedly - I aint and just go with the flow.Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives.:j0

Well I think more retailers should push for home delivery. Morrision, Iceland, Farmfoods they should all jump online and start serving us like we live in the 21st century cut bags by 70% but obviously would lead to an increase on petrol. So then maybe the automotive industries should stop delaying and supressing cheaper and affordable transport. This is nothing but pushing the whole go 'Green' era at our expense.
Pfftt. this is where it starts, they already got us recycling our own waste/sorting out our own trash.. yet councle tax goes up year by year have us working round the clock like peasants. inflation hits the roof now we pay double for carrier bags bloody raping the consumers STUPID!0 -
I think even if the Government want to tax bags then the retailers should absorb the cost - it's not like Tescos etc can't afford it! When I lived in Germany people used to take all the unnecessary packaging off their shopping and leave it on the packing shelf - Aldi have a big bin by the shelf for this. It is amazing how much less space your shopping takes up when you do this!Jane
