But paper is a lot easier and more enviromentally friendly to recycle than plastic!

But try carrying your shopping home in the rain! Have you ever seen a Primark paper bag after it's been raining for a bit? It disintegrates and that's with just some clothes in it. Imagine 2l of milk and some tins, I doubt it would last 10 mins.

    It's only a game

Exactly - i hate paper bags! I used to be shopping in Dublin quite often and the clothes companies all now give paper bags which are basically useless.

It rains in Ireland, and they are no where near as strong as the plastic bags

if i have supermaket bags at home i use them for linning the litter bin.

if i forget to take my bags to the supermarket i just grab a few banana boxes. there is always loads flying around. then recycle them.

Why do you think the supermarkets leave carboard boxes for your shopping?

To cut down on their disposal/waste costs - simples -the fact they help you is pure luck.

You then pay through higher council tax to have your recycling removed.

Aldi get away with it because it was their published trading model before they even opened the store. They even have "packing" shelves as their check outs work differently. This allowas you to maximise whatever bags you use.

I think it's a good idea, we need to cut down on plastic waste. I've got some jute bags from Tesco and they're so much easier than the little carriers to put things in.

A friend of mine said she was too busy to recycle the other day, !!!!!!? too busy to put tins/paper/glass in one bag and rubbish in another? Like it or not, we've all got to do our bit to recycle as much as possible.

    Happy moneysaving all.

    So what's the other 80%?

A good percentage would be adult incontinence pads with a smaller volume nappies.

I use carrier bags for rubbish occasionally. Can't see the difference between using a carrier twice (once for shopping and once for rubbish) or purposely buying plastic bags such as bin liners. They're both plastic and neither environmentally friendly.

Having said that, I do prefer the jute type bags as they hold so much more weight. Can't get a carrier to hold 6pt milk, 2.5k potatoes, few kilos of sugar plus other shopping.

Charging for bags will only last a week or 2 . Every other store I know of that has started this has re-instated free bags after a big drop off in trade .

My M&S charge for bags in the food bit and as others have said so do lidl and aldi. I would rather reuse my other bags than have new ones every time I shopped. Most other countries dont provide a lot of bags either. I'm sure in Australia they don't use plastic bags at all as if they get into the sea they can get tangled in the sea creatures. Less bags is less plastic which in turn is less crude oil which I'm sure we don't have unlimited supplies of.

Australia do use plastic bags. I was in Melbourne, Cairns and Sydney last September and everywhere we shopped at had plastic bags. I think they were free too.

I alos cant stand people moaning about the bags. And I have had people leave their goods on my til when they discover we charge for bags. No skin off my nose but lot's off theirs if they then have to go shop somewhere else, and who knows, maybe elsewhere the things they were going to buy won't be on offer so they will possibly pay more in the end anyway?!

I especially hate when someone has just spent £20 on reduced items worth about £50 and then moan about spending 5p on a bag!

Just read a comment on Sainsbury's Facebook page, not sure if it's true or not. I haven't heard of this & I work there!

As from the 5th October, Sainsbury's are doing away with the free orange bags, and you'll be able to take your shopping home in the bags for life bags. This is because there are too many plastic bags littering our seas and countrysides, causing un-repairable damage to the enviroment. A bag for life will see you take endless shopping home, and if it breaks, it will be replaced for free. This is something that should have been brought in years ago.

Maybe he has got confused and they are having another "Make the difference" day and giving away free bags for live, for a day.
