Asda charging for carrier bags?

I was in Asda earlier and noticed the lack of carrier bags on the self-service tills. I asked the assistant for some carriers but would only give me 1 at a time.
It transpires that Asda are going to start charging for carrier bags so they were rationing them. A bit bizzarre really!

Anyone heard this?:(

They are doing in the Grantham store; I forgot my bags for life and she explained that they are trying to get people to stop using the plastic carriers again.
Now I am employed, lets get rid of this student debt! :D:D
  • It just another opportunity for them to make more money.

I said this to my Mum, I think I would only buy a charity one! I have lots of bags for life, those Cath Kidston ones from Tesco a few years back have really lasted me!

I agree, those free bags aren't really free, they have added the cost of buying, store and distributing them to the cost of the groceries we buy.

So if they start charging for them we will be paying for them twice.

    I'm with custardy

From the 1st October of this year, plastic bags in Wales will be charged for.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

They are trying not to use as many free bags, even the normal checkouts, the bags in my store I work at arent kept under the tills now we have to ask for some and they dont always give us lots!

I know we only get sent so many to the store and have run out in the past too so have to try cut back!
also the cost of free bags for the store, think it costs our store are about £70 per day weekdays and up to £110 per day weekends...
    Make £10 a day Challenge June - £170

£70 per day is less than £3 per hour
    so at 5p per bag,3 per customer(picking a random bag price/number)
that would be covered in 20 customers per hour

I think you're all missing the point. They are trying to get customers to use less carrier bags because of this http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/dec/18/plasticbags-waste
not because they're trying to make more money by selling carrier bags.
If you will the end, you must will the means.
