Backpacker insurance required for 2nd year away

My son has been away in Oz for a year on a working holiday visa. He has accumulated enough days to get a 2nd year visa. When he goes back he will have been in the uk for 2 months.

We can't find any insurers who will insurance for another year. The sticking point seems to be that you have to have been in the uk for 6 of the last 12 months.

Has anyone had to deal with this and managed to find someone who will cover their backpacker?

I am pretty sure most require you to have been resident in the UK for atleast 6 months.

There are some online companies that should be able to arrange cover, but are pretty expensive.

    Worldnomads.com
    worldwideinsure.com

Might also be worth phoning STA Travel to see if they can help. It will be the student friendly type Insurers that are most likely to offer cover. I expect they come across this type of situation fairly often.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
  • I'm in the same situation as this with my daughter. Did you manage to get travel insurance sorted out and if so could you tell me who with? Be most grateful.
  • In the same boat too. Been living in South Korea for the past 2 years so we can't find anything other than worldnomads who are quoting $1500 for the 2 of us for 8 months. Crazy.

Having said that I just spoke to STA travel in NZ (where we will start our trip) and they said it might be possible so are sending me a quote. I'll report back with any info.

If anyone knows any other insurers that would do the job please let us know.
