Liitle surprise for your partner/special guests

Hi all,

Well I got engaged last weekend, so now I feel like I can nosy around this board for a reason! Have always enjoyed reading the great ideas that people come up with here - can't quite believe how creative many of you are (and on a tight budget sometimes)!

Anyway, when I am up giving my speech as the groom next year (date TBC!), I would really like to surprise my wife to be with some sort of a meaningful gift. Would also like to do the same for both sets of parents - on top of the flowers and bottle of booze that we will give them. Has anyone done anything like this, and revealed the gift in the middle of the speech? Perhaps have someone take the gift in when you say you have a little surprise for them?

I don't even know what the surprise could be! Nothing expensive, just meaningful. You can probably already tell that I'm rubbish at this...

Does your wife have a pandora bracelet or something similar...maybe a charm..perhaps if she doesnt then you could buy her the bracelet now and add the charms at other significant times...

To be honest thou..if my husband would have got out a present for me to unwrap infront of all the guests I may have been a little embarrassed...however if he had arranged for a small hamper of pamper products and favourite bubble bath to be left in our room that night for use the next morning I would have been totally spoilt!!

As it actually turned out we exchanged gifts the afternoon before our wedding and he gave me a lovely necklace...me I gave him a sign for our house incorporating our new name...!!!

  • Congratulations on your engagement! And Mandy is correct - I don't think my H2B has got me anything (getting married on sat!)

There's another thread here which might help: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3370344

I have bought him a hoody (most likely I'll end up wearing it on the plane to the honeymoon!), a funny t shirt, and the words of our first dance printed in an arty way onto canvas (that's the meaningful one!). Just bits really

This will be so hard for us to advise on because for it to be meaningful it'd need to be personal and individual to your bride. For example, on our first holiday together MrD gave me a shell from the beach, I still have it. If he presented it to me on say a leather strap to wear as a necklace on our wedding day I would be so touched (although the Bridezilla in me would freak out cause it wouldn't match my outfit ha!) But something like that only we know about - actually I would wonder if he even remembers he gave me it!
  • Cross posted with LEJC - but yes, I'd also prefer the gift in private for me - for family it's nice to do in the speeches

Hmm maybe it might be a bit embarassing for her having to open a present in front of a couple of hundred people. Noted.

Mandy I'm really not sure what kind of gift I mean - but the spa day is really cool :) Maybe I could do that a few days ahead of the wedding so she can be all relaxed!

Thank you so much for the replies and suggestions :)

yeh for me i would have wanted to open a pressie in front of the guests in the middle of the speeches- so good that has been brought up

another idea is a letter from football/or celebs??---- I got my husband a letter from man united and the best man gave it to him during the speech-- could you do a similar thing- football or any other celeb?

i did a boudair shoot and got my hubby a album of the piccies, i also got him a card--- i gave him the card the morning after the wedding and the album while we were on honeymoon---
it meant more to him and me to give the pressies to him/me not on the wedding day itself

If your wife is a football fan, a letter from her team's manager is an idea.

I stole this idea from this forum, and got a letter from Arsenal, and it went down an absolute storm with all the guests & him.

These pics sum up the response :D
