Snow Leopard was also a release where very few 'new features' were introduced because the focus was on optimisation. For anyone running OSx, Snow Leopard is a must have in this respect because it will feel snappier™ :A

    Just a warning!

I think Tiger to Leopard lost a load of OS9 software most of it very user-friendly. If your neighbour has an intel machine though I doubt that your they could have run this software so there's nothing to lose from that upgrade.
However, switching from Tiger, Leopard. or Snow Leopard to Lion could trash most of his existing programmes as it dumps a load of software needed to run the old stuff. Old versions of Office, Adobe etc.

This online bbc article covers the issue quite well.

It suggests that your neighbour might then have to spend £00s trying to update his other software to catch up.

It might just be easier to make a smaller upgrade step instead.

  • The intel macs can not run mac os 9 apps. I believe you can upgrade from tiger to snow leopard even its meant to be from leopard. to switch off lion reverse scrolling go into the trackpad or mouse and untick natural scrolling.
