A similar thing happened to me a few weeks ago in Tesco only I shopped in the store not online. The took my payment twice a week before payday leaving me with no money at all. I called my bank who said there was nothing they could do and that the money would go back into my account in 7-10 days and Tesco absolutely refused to give me the money back despite me speaking to the store manager on a number of occasion regarding the matter. Unfortunately i did end up waiting 10 days to getmy money back. I too was extremely upset and it ruined my week completely so i know exactly how you feel.

I had the same experience with mamas and papas when buying a pram etc, the total cost should have been £500 and they ringfenced two additional amounts. This meant that my account was down by over £1500!! Makes me sound rich but rich I am not and it caused HUGE problems. I was told by M&P's that they were trying to refund the money to me and that the bank had to accept the refund (of 2 x amounts). I was then informed that if the bank accepted it I would see the money back the following day. The bank rejected it!! I called the bank who said they needed a specific transaction number, I called M&P's and they said they had never heard of said number. In the end the money came back to me after 4 days. I was told 3 - 5 working days if the original refunds were rejected. Not sure why you have to wait 10 days. I was lucky enough to get through to someone in a UK call centre for both M&P's and the bank, not lucky enough though as I ended up with a £70 phone bill having had to make so many calls from my mobile. Get in touch with your bank and tell them that you can't live without this money, when I told them that I was offered an interest and charge free temporary overdraft. Just a suggestion...

hi, exactly the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago i was bloody livid! but after i had got off the phone at the asda call centre i rung my bank (halifax) and explained that they had taken two lots of payments out and that the first payment wasnt needed the lady at the bank said she could therefore cancel that first payment as long as i was sure it wasnt going to be taken and then the money would go back into my account straightaway. she did this and my account went back in credit again( thank god) and as i was only overdrawn for not even a day i didnt get charged luckerly! op i would ring your bank asap and explain the situation and ask if they cancel one of the payments and that should put you back in the black. its horrible when they mess up like that i was nearly in tears too hope you get it sorted op x

I had the experience of an on-line payment being taken twice by More Than insurance. It was in the region of £220 - making a charge of £440.

Fortunately, my account had sufficient money in it so it was not an immediate problem.

But I did ring them up the next morning and explained the problem, which they recognised as a glitch on that day with their website and the money was back in my account by that lunchtime - so it is possible for a company to do an immediate refund, if they have the will and customer-care to do so.
  • Also having the same problem with asda at the moment. They 'held' one amount from my bank on the morning of my delivery but then took the money straight from the bank. Quite embarrassing when i went to pay for my car tax by card and was declined!!!!! and to add insult i wont get the money back for 10 working days. It's just not on. It may not be alot of money but this really creates hassle for some people who are on a REALLY tight budget like me. Tesco here we come!
  • I can't believe how many folks have had the same problem with ASDA. Its ridiculous.
I don't know if Martin has ever highlighted this ongoing problem but a boycott by consumers would soon make asda find a solution to this.
    OP- good luck!

Difference is the money was actually taken twice so it could be refunded, when it has just been "reserved" there is nothing to refund...Still no excuse though and it seems to happen far too often with ASDA.
