Rubbish.
A/ I have never yet had manager calling me to check new employees old P45
B/ Salary is not just in what is on your payslip/P45. It includes any "perks" that go with it, such as employer's pension contributions, company car, shares, bonus you didn't stay for this tax year...0 -
unpaid leave, sick pay, paternity pay.... I can go on and on and on...
Probably why no one ever checks the P45 for this info...0 -
So certainly to the agent, and probably to the employer, the answer is "well, one of the reasons I am job hunting is that I feel my current salary does not match what I am doing, and certainly does not match my capabilities, so I am looking for a minimum of ..."
What you're currently on is, IMO, irrelevant.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
I spent years being paid considerably less than my colleagues because I was honest about my salary when I applied for jobs. Never, ever got pay rises to bring me in line and new employees would come in on a higher salary than me!
Wised up, over-egged my salary claim at interviews and am now on a par with colleagues! I would always do the same.

Happenned again today.
agent phoned me up and said they had a job going for Virgin. said they thought I was ideal for the role and they are paying 45k (above the market rate), and then he asked me "that" question, and I had to sheepishly say 26k + 20% bonus and he went "rrrriiigggght......"
Still he wants to send my cv across, but the reaction to me said it all.
Your response should not be "26k plus 20% bonus" it should be "It works out to around 32k.... and yes I know, it's why i'm looking for a move!""On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." I see what you mean. Perhaps its time just apply for jobs without using an agent. Or is that being too naive and behind the times?
Probably not Virgin now as the the recruiting agent gave you the lead, but other firms.
What about looking local press and trade/professional journals? Not all firms use agents. Perhaps the employers who ask your present salary do so because they are used dealing with agents, who seem to regard present salary as very important.0 -
Thanks for the responses.
However, it is my experience, that if you are successful at interview they then request to see references. And whenever I have previously seen my bosses do these, it normally has a box asking them to confirm what salary you are on. So if you do lie it may not look very good??0 -
How about 'my usual salary is X' (X being the old 8K more salary if your current salary is the discrepancy0
-
If you were to lie about current salary, Does the new employer not find out when they see your P46 or whatever that form is called that you take to your new employer?0
