Help / Advice Needed

To cut a long story short we live in private rented accom and this month haven't been able to pay rent (4 days late so far) - Im on STAT MAT leave and funds just don't cover it.

We have no money to pay it, (resorting to selling car to obtain funds hopefully can pay begin sept)

We've been late twice before (no more than 7 days)

Worried they might turf us out - is this likely to happen. - Scared to answer phone in case landlord and not sure what to do/say.

Should I ring them an explain? So confused :(

PLease advise.

yes you should ring and explain your situation and plan the next step with your landlord, sadly ignoring the problem won't make it go away

  • So what happens when you've sold the car, spent the money and rent is due again?

Your rent has been late 3 times, you clearly can't afford this place so need to move somewhere cheaper.

Check www.turn2us.org.uk in case you can get any additional help.

Write to the LL, urgently to let them know what you are doing to sort it out..

Go over to the Debt free wannabee forum and ask for help with an SOA.

Go over to the moneysaving oldstyle forum and do a storecupboard challenge; list the contents of the cupboards and freezers and live on as little as possible this month.

When does the fixed term end?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

When are you returning to work?

Make sure you are claiming everything you are entitled to. If this is going to be a long term problem you need to consider moving somewhere cheaper. If short term, you need to prioritise your debts. Even borrowing on credit card would be cheaper than the costs of having to move home.

Do keep your landlord informed, he may have his own bills to meet.

Are you able to get a (part-time) job to cover the shortfall?
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!
  • Hi,

@quint, ras and silver - Thanks for advice, will write a letter now.

@danny - we're struggling as I'm on SMP at momemt so my wage has gone down by £790 pcm this is an short term issue. We have 2 cars - selling OH (worth approx 6k) and using mine (small run around) - one is surplus to requirements really so choose OH as worth more.

@ras - it ends in feb (we took on 12 months :( so can't move until feb)
Yes - i'll redo our SOA - used to doing them - i'm a big fan of the DFW board

@silver - 90% sure i'm returning to work in oct - money should ease from sept as i will have finish my IVA last payment gone out this month.

I don't really want to move again - my children are so young its not fair on them. Plus the fees involved with moving are expensive. Houses are very expensive in our area an the house we in is a bargain compared to prices of other 3 beds in the area.

@evoke - no sure i can get a p/t job whilst on maternity leave. but thanks for the input :)
