ipad 2 good christmas gift for a 12 year old ??

This has been a useful thread, especially the link to google android tablet (http://www.amazon.co.uk/NATPC-M009S-Google-Android-Tablet/dp/B004RAN7VI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314043364&sr=8-1). One thing to comment on to the poster who mentioned her daughter who's a budding author - I'd be warey of giving a touch screen tablet to someone who will be doing lots of typing - my opinion would be that you'd be better off considering something like a laptop or netbook to allow a bit more flexibility

Off to research tablets some more now!

I would say go for it. My sister brought my 10 year an ipad 2 home from America and he loves it, he only wanted her to bring him home a boombox.As for extras i got the case, and for christmas i will get him the apple tv and some itunes vouchers you can also take out the insurance online incase anything happens.

I was lucky enough to be able to get my 11 year old the HP touchpad for xmas. If I had the money I would have got the iPad. She had the touch last Xmas and she was given iTunes vouchers by other relatives so no worries with her using my credit card.

Just a heads up for anyone interested - since the thread started there has now been a credible report of an imminent new entrant to the market coming from Amazon - a Kindle Tablet. Its likely to run Android 2.1 or 2.2 and developer opinion is that it won't see the kind of upgrades most Android tablets will but its likely to be quite stable as a platform and also to be marketed as a colour Kindle Reader rather than full tablet. It will almost certainly have a web browser and email etc and there may be games/apps and Amazon will no doubt have stuff for it in the Kindle store. Current reports have it as a 7" and will have a colour screen and be available for about $250 in the US. in Oct/Nov.
