They are great.. nice pressie for a 12 year old if you're willing to spend the money.
Only thing you'll need is a case0 -
Other than a case no extras needed. I bought one for the same purpose last year.0

Also, a 12 year old should have no problem using it. However, it's worth noting that there are lots of great apps/games - but the best stuff is not free. You will need an apple account to purchase apps (you can buy App store vouchers in WHSmiths). I have mine linked to my debit card so purchase are immediately charged for. Not sure how a 12 year old would pay for them.
Here's a case recommendation - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Griffin-GB02480-Survivor-Military-Stand/dp/B004SPVZKW/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
It's fab, my 2 year old uses it and i don't mind since it's in that case0 -

Wait to buy the games at any public holiday in the US and you'll find most are reduced to £0.69.
As to a 12yo buying, give them an iTunes a/c and buy them vouchers (won't need a card that way).0 -
An Ipad for a 12 year old??? Seriously?
Without meaning to be rude, that's well over than £400 for a basic model and more. I wouldn't even spend that on my parents or OH who are particularly religious. What's wrong with a bike, or a kindle if it needs to be techy?
I just find it amazing."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0 -

What on earth does religion have to do with it?
Do you own a Kindle and how are the games on it? That's essentially what a child will use it for.0 -
thanks for all the tips...i have tried to thank posts but 'puter is playing up...i must need an ipad as well
i think £400 is acceptable for a nice christmas gift...we normally spend about a grand on each child....what do u buy a sugar mouse and a satsuma ??onwards and upwards0 -
I know this is not the same as an IPad, but this is a popular alternative and very affordable:

PC world has the original iPad, the £700 one down to £399 right now.
Me, I think they are worth the money so long as you get a good quality case, such as the griffin that ringo linked too.
ETA, and really, its not that much more than an xbox but can do so much more.0 -
Jaw drops....can you be my parents OP- Thats one fantastic Christmas present! I don't think I'll even get as close as to touch one of those things in my lifetime!
I'd be wary though of it breaking or the screen being damaged, also of any problems caused by dropping or slipping or (worst though) it gets stolen by a larger kid/gang, kids don't seem to see boundaries the same way as adults and with bullying at a height at that age, its something you may want to get insured.
Other then that, I'm sure he will have a very (very) merry Christmas!
