Failed Transactions - HSBC - Thomson Holidays

Wondering if anyone can shed some light on this as I am getting no where with either HSBC or Thomson

Last week I booked a holiday via the Thomson website and as I was paying the £200 deposit the ever so reliable Verified by Visa page crashed.

I checked my internet banking immediately and it was not showing a payment in statement view but my available balance was £200 less.

One week on and it is still the same. It does not state that £200 payment has been made to Thomson but my available balance is missing £200. I assume the payment is still waiting to be authorised.

Over the past week I have spoken to Thomson who say the holiday is not booked as it shows the payment failed. They do not have the money and they can also not claim the money.

Spoken to HSBC and they have noted a payment to Thomson was authorised last week I explained it is not showing as being paid but must be still pending. HSBC say I need to speak to Thomson as nothing they can so. Thomson vice versa.

I just want to know where the £200 is? Will it be returned to me? Is it stuck in limbo?

Any help would be grateful

Cheers

This transaction has been authorised but not claimed.

If Thompson don't claim the funds within about 7-10 days the amount will be re-credited back to your available balance.

Don't worry if your available balance drops below zero in the mean time as banks don't charge based on pending transactions.

  • Thank you for the quick reply.

See, why can't HSBC just say that. Instead they tell me the payment has been made and authorised yet it does not show on my statement.

    Thank you again.

This is odd, my friend has had a similar thing happen last week! Tried to buy some clothes online from a well-known high street retailer, transaction crashed, but the opposite thing to you happened.

HSBC called and said the transaction failed, she then called the retailer who somehow put the transaction through. The HSBC credit limit (which changes online immediately) did not change, but she later received TWO of the item and a store credit card agreement (which said she had only been charged for one).

Because it's all they can see.

As they said, speak to Thomson.

As lokolo says, the bank sees a retailer that has submitted a transaction. It doesnt know if it has failed in transmission or if its coming. 99/100, the transaction will appear 2-3 days later and the earmark removed.

The bank is able to reduce/remove earmarks. However, you wont find many willing to unless it is for one of their better accounts. However, the better accounts tend to have higher balances and a stray earmark for 3-4 days isnt going to cause problems.

I've had several problems with Verified by Visa transactions in the last few months including Thomson Holidays. It appears to be due to a problem with my browser Firefox 5 -the default option with this browser is to block third party cookies which apparently screws up "Verified by Visa" type secure transactions!!!
The same transactions went thru when I used Internet Explorer.
There are receipts on the securecode site for the failed transactions but the money wasn't ever debited.:)
