Passport renewal

If your passport is expired, what is the latest you can use it as proof of ID when applying for a new one? (i.e. you can post your old passport with the application form as ID and not need the new photo to be counter signed)

I seem to remember hearing that passports are valid ID for two years after the date of expiry even though they are not valid for foreign travel after the expiry date. However, I can't find any information to confirm that.

Just renewed mine this morning and they just use the old passport as ID and you only need 2 other photos (not signed).

    That's not necessarily true
The photo's will need signing if you have changed a lot since your last pp was issued such as gained or lost a lot of weight; dramatically changed your hair colour; your last pp used a photo of you smiling ...

As far as the pp office is concerned you have a pp, when it was issued makes no difference if you are a UK national
Your photo will need resigning if .... see my reply above (renewed my pp last year)

Well mine didn't need signing this morning and I used the check and send service so they would have pointed it out if it needed signing.

OK Thanks. The reason I was asking is because my passport expires in a couple of years so I was wondering if I could plan to go on a couple of holidays within the UK/Ireland/Channel Islands/Isle of Man for a couple of years after expiry of my passport and then get a new passport without going through the hassle of getting an approved person to do a counter signature.
