Contents Insurance (inc Iphone)

Hi

My home contents insurance is due (i live in a flat therefore only need contents) and i was hoping to be able to add my iphone 4 to the next policy, as insuring the phone seperately is quite costly.

Is there any companies who allow this as i would really like it to be covered for damage and not just for theft?

Thanks

Ive only just started doing buildings and contents insurance. You can have it included in your policy. It costs about £10 a month to include it.

One alternative i found though was to get one of those posh bank accounts. They cost about £12 a month. You get free mobile phone insurance, travel insurnace and breakdown cover all included. I made a claim on my breakdown cover 2-3 weeks ago there were no issues what so ever.

You get other things included too but i couldnt tell you what they are.

  • For most insurers your phone is covered automatically as part of your contents and your personal possessions if you have that extension.

The issue with home insurance cover for it is that it will not cover breakdown unless its caused by accidental damage and will not have significant/ any cover for phonecalls etc if the phone is stolen/ lost.

Of cause the other consideration is if it would be worth claiming at all.... your phone will soon be about £400 when the iPhone 5 gets released shortly, you'll then have a £100-200 excess to pay towards any claim. So for £300-200 settlement you'll lose your no claims discount and have inflated premiums due to the claim for the next 3-5 years.

You probably know more about General Insurance than me as ive literally started in the last month, but i have done some quotes over the last week for some clients and the excess between £100 and £50 makes about 50pence difference.

Would it not just make sense to have the lowest excess?

  • It obviously does if the pricing difference is that small but many insurers are raising their minimum excess to stop spurious and tiny claims. With tiny claims for a spilled cup of coffee etc it is often more costly to administer the claim than the actual cost of the repairing the damage.
