REMINDER Pay off your mortgage in 2 years

I thought the programme was very good.
I too found is very inspirational, to the point that when I eventually took my mortgage out later that year, I immediately started overpaying by the maximum 20% even from the very first payment. It was a great feeling to get a letter the evry next day saying that if I kept it up for the life of the mortgage, I would pay off 7 years early and save myself almost £40,000. The first payment hadn't even gone out at that point
I agree a bit with what Idophreak is saying, but if it was really easy, everyone would do it.... I for one would make sacrifices for two years if it meant that I could be free of the mortgage burden after that two years. It wasn't as bad as you make out though IMO, it was just a case of earn more, spend less.... no one said they couldn't see friends and family, no one said they couldn't treat themselves, it was just a case of looking objectively at what they spend on and then refining that. Most MSE'ers do that stuff anyway...
i.e.
Night out on the beer in town = £60+ per couple instead rent a dvd and buy a couple of bottles of wine = £15 per couple or get all your friends and make a night of it......
Not too difficult IMO in return for a great reward!

The stoves chappy I would imagine is doing well, the stove on it's own inc VAT excluding delivery is £2600+!
I too thought it was a tad unrealistic, and should have been a 'Pay off your mortgage in half the time/10 years' type thing, but as with most things, they needed an attention grabbing title to get the backing and commission I imagine.

Each time around he said the same things:
1) Spend less. That includes quitting *any* social life you may have liked.
2) Earn more. Get another job, give up all of your spare time, don't see your friends, don't spend quality time with your partner.
3) Live, eat, drink and sleep money. Think about nothing else. For the next two years of your life MONEY IS YOUR LIFE.
I just think it made the 2 year goal seem quite unhealthy and unrealistic for most people. Oh, to say nothing of the fact that some people on the show earnt pretty well and had really tiny mortgages.
I'm not sure which series you watched but I can assure you that we never gave up our social life, all our spare time, our friends and quality time together. In fact I would say we became closer to each other, our children and our friends.
It made me grow up and be responsible for the first time in my 41 years
Regards

@ Sean Casey-Poole,
Were you really on this show?
Can you describe your situation, or if there is a link to some details about the show you were on.
Some were more memorable than others (i.e. the stoves man) but its amazing to think we have someone on this site who has been on the programme!

Like Cazmanian has pointed out we were the first in the series, I was the one that was hopeless with money, forever buying gadgets I didn't need, running up credit card debts and generally making my wifes life very hard. I was nearing forty and going nowhere in life, hence why I volunteered for the project in the first place.
All being well I will be bringing a book out soon telling all about our two years.
Our programme was due on next week but it is now the 5th programme of the series on February 8th.0 -
It looked more like how to ensure you get divorced or split up within two years <grin>
Seriously i loved the programme and it has inspired me to do something very positive about trying to pay mine off
It did seem like it was pushing people tooooo much though, BUT maybe that is just television who wants to watch a happy family show?
I cannot wait to see tomorrow nights !!!donstermonster0
