Creda condensing tumble dryer

Options
If anyone is considering buying a new dryer, I thought I should share this with you.
On December 26, 2005, I bought a Creda TCR2 condensing tumble dryer for £149.99 from the now defunct Powerhouse.
Today, January 7, 2007 i.e. 12 days outside its one year warranty, the dryer is kaput. It goes through the motions alright but no heat, so no dry clothes.
I spoke to Customer Services on an 0870 number and was kept waiting 7 minutes before speaking to a live person. I did get a geographic number from saynoto0870 but Hotpoint (Creda) seem to have got wise to that and I was cut off.
Anyway, at Customer Services I was asked if I had an extended warranty. No? Tut, tut. We can send an engineer for £89.98p to fix one fault; alternatively you can take out an extended service plan at £14.98 per month for ten months. £149.80?? Yes, but it has benefits. You can call us out any number of times. I could buy a new one for that much. That is your prerogative, sir.
I am glad I have got that off my chest. Maybe I was unlucky but me and Creda is not friends nomore; and the same also goes, as far as I am concerned, for the rest of the brands strutting under the same banner.

Thanks a lot for that link. The problem sounds identical to mine, only my dryer didn't take as long to break down. I will try the same course of action, then post the results here. Thanks again.

    Hello colbee

Your thread will be better placed in 'The (Consumer) Vent' board, so I'll move it across.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

  • the problem you may find you have different to the person on the other forum is that as the contract is with the retailer, the fact that powerhouse no longer exist means that they are not able to reimburse you for repair charges like the other forum poster got from his retailer,
as SOGA would effect the company that sold it to you and not the manufacturer

Had the same problem with my Hotpoint (I think it's basically the same construction) but mine was 2 years old. All it needed doing was the 2 x thermisers replacing. These are 2 metal 'pills' inside that have an electrical connection at either side. When they are too warm they cut the heat off. When they fail they cut the heat off. This is basically why your drier still works but doesn't dry.

If your quite compitent or know somebody that is, you can get a set of these parts for about £12. It took me about an hour to take off the lid, back, replace the parts & then put them all back in again (electricity unplugged, safety first!)

I know you probably want Creda to repair for free, but at the end of the day, it's an option so you can get your drier up and running now in the depths of winter rather than the weeks of arguing with Creda.

    Good luck either way

Had similar problem with my Creda dryer a couple of years ago. Local repair man came and repaired fault, around £30 charge. Machine has been fine since then. Look for local repair firms in your local newspaper.

Latest update. As the retailer has gone belly-up I tried the manufacturer - no joy. So now I've sent a letter to my credit card company saying that I hold them equally liable. Not had a response yet.
