And when you are finally stopped and you release the accelerator what happens?...

I stall, so I just keep revving up while in neutral to stop that happening.
I have been driving my husbands car since before christmas as I am too frightened of not being able to get it started again.

The man across the road form us services our cars so I am going to print out all the comments ans see if that can help him.
My husbands mazda is very reliable but it is like driving a go kart, it is so low I feel like I am sitting on the floor.

blunose1...I like the sound of your husband, he seems like a wise man.

I don't know about that. He has actually had the same mazda (i THINK 626) for about 8/9 years!!!!! It has been so reliable he doesn't see the point in upgrading for the sake of it. We are both only interested in a car that gets us from A to B.

    Glad to be of service.
Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!

There are three types of people in the world, those who can add up and those who can't.

    Dear all,
the car is finally back on the road in full working order. Hurray.
For anyone with similar problems it needed a new Idle Control Valve. Set us back £240 with labour.
Hopefully get another few years out of it.
    Thanks for all your help.

I was going to say, ICV is a classic cause of problems. I had a friend who bought a Cavalier Ecotec that stalled at traffic lights. I cleaned the throttle housing and ICV out with some carb cleaner, took 20 minutes. No problem afterwards.
    Happy chappy
