Canon MP600 paper won't feed

Just started having problems with our Canon MP600 multifunction. The paper tray is full, no blockages and no error messages. But the paper will not feed - it starts making its feed paper noise, but no paper feeds. Can't see the mechanism so can't work out any obvious reason why.
Does anyone know what can cause this and how expensive it would be to fix?

Alternatively am going to have to look for another multifunction. Not sure if I should stay with Canon. I need something simple to use that prints, copies and scans reasonably fast and works with both mac and PC.
Thanks for any help

Has anything changed in My printer settings for paper source?

Does paper feed from the auto sheet feeder?

Personally I tend to regard printers as disposable with the ink being the ongoing cost. Currently have a Canon MP180 after the last canon failed as it was compatible with cartridges I had in the older one.

Printer 'brand new' without cartridges <£10 on ebay, popped in the old cartridges and wwill carry on till that one goes.

Definitely don't recommend spending any money on a printer with 'bells and whistles', get a nice simple one that offers decent print quality as they all gum up with dust/fail within a few years eventually.

(Do a bit of fiddling with your existing one first tho)

No settings have changed and no, it doesn't feed at all, just makes the 'start feeding' noise until the machine announces it's out of paper (which it isn't of course).

Any recomms on a decent all in one? Wifi would be very useful as we have computers on different levels (upstairs mezzanine office area) but not 100% essential. Sub £100 definitely and PC and mac compatible (I assume they all are these days? Or do you have to set it up differently for different OS?) thanks

i'm just getting the user manual for the printer for more ideas but the following 2 things might help :

Have you got some thick paper or thin card handy?

It might be that the rubber that picks up the paper is dirty (so it can't grab the paper) best be is a wet cotton bud and holding it on the rubber while it's moving (if you can get access) that will usually clean it enough ti pick up paper again.

    Or

A small scrap of paper is stopping the mechanism form working properly and by usually using thin card an manually feeding it through the printer it can move any blockages.

Check local Sainsburys or ADSA that usually have a wireless HP scanner printer for around £30

How important is the quality of scanning output and also photos?

Have you any preferences as to make?

    Canon e-mail support is here

There is the Canon MG 6150 with review here

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PIXMA-MG6150-Colour-Printer/dp/B00400OK2K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314026975&sr=8-1

That is the best price I have seen so far, however, it is available from Currys, Dixons and PC World for the same price at the moment

The Canon MG 5250 is here at £76 with reviews

Also from Currys, Dixons and PC World for £79

If you are going to use compatible inks, usually, Epson printers have the better availability, though the specifications of the MG 6150 are very good IMO

Canon support (thanks for all the links santer) have managed to get it to copy manually - hoping for the best for printing and will try later on. The Dell that it's connected to by usb takes so long to fire up that I'll have to check in 20 mins!

It seemed to have auto set itself not to feed paper from the cartridge. If anyone else has this problem, check the little light on the control panel on the printer image graphic. If it's not above the printer image emblem, push the little black button to the rhs of the image so that the green light shows on the top. Then try manual copying, printing.
I have to unplug the printer from the mains and usb for 30 mins, then fire up again. Plus reinstall my printer software.
