I recently got a parking ticket in a pub car park. However the person who issued the ticket put down the wrong number plate. Does this make the ticket invalid?

If it is from a private parking company it makes no difference, have a read of the 100's of threads on here about them then relax and ignore it.
There is absolutely no point in appealing or entering into any correspondence with the company that issued the invoice as they will just keep churning out the same standard letters until they get fed up0 -
We need to know where it asks you to send the money and to who before we can issue advice.
But I am 99% certain we can save you the bill.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

If it's not a council/police/TfL ticket, ignore it, and ignore any begging letters you get. It should stop after 5 or 6 letters at most - come back in the highly, highly unlikely event you get sealed court papers though!
If it is a council/police ticket, it will be invalid. In this case, write to whoever issued it telling them that a ticket was attached to your car, but that the registration on the ticket does not match that of your car (don't admit any guilt, just tell them the registration didn't match). Councils will take photos as well, so they would be able to trace you through the correct registration on the photo, if they wanted to pursue it - and you could have a harder job defending if you ignore it.
They'll doubtless respond with some patronising crap about letting you off this once, but don't do it again - but frankly they should do their job properly...
(FWIW my experience was getting a ticket at 8.30am on a Saturday morning in a council leisure centre car park - I was using the leisure centre at the time. I hadn't realised they charged at weekends, and can't really understand why they bothered sending someone round a car park that contained about 6 cars rather than sorting out some of the other inconsiderate parking in the area. Still, they had my reg wrong, so we'll call it a score draw)0
