I sold my town house a few months ago & have to say that, in all honesty, I wouldn't buy another one again. Or, at least with the same layout that I had.

ground: Kitchen, dining room & WC
    1st: bed 3 &4, lounge, shower room
    2nd: master & ensuite, bed 2, bathroom

I can see it working more if the kitchen is on the same level as the lounge. But in my case it wasn't and, apart from being a bit of a pain every time you wanted a drink, was quite isolating when you were the one cooking & everyone else was upstairs.

The upside of townhouses is that you do get a lot of internal space for the money. However, for me they have too many niggly downsides to compensate for the increased space per £ that you get

probably not, but one per floor & an extra doesn't seem too excessive ?

a lot of houses these days seem to have an ambudance of toilets and bathrooms, i cant understand it myself

however, on townhouses, i havent lived in one so my opinion is less valid but i really cant stand the thought of so many stairs, plus most dont have the lounge on the same floor as the kitchen and i cant bear the thought of traipsing up and down stairs with tea and biccies , i drink a lot of tea

Living in a townhouse with stairs between the kitchen & lounge was the reason cited by Mr.G for the lack of tea provision to me. We have since moved to a standard house however, and the situation still hasn't resolved.....! hurrumph....:p

They've never struck me as being very wide ... which means you have neighbours perhaps closer than you'd like.

We moved into a townhouse 3 months ago and I have to say we love it.

    House configuration is

Ground floor: WC, Kitchen Diner & Garage
1st floor: Living room, family bathroom, bedroom 3 & 4
2nd floor: Master bedroom with ensuite & bedroom 2

We were only talking about it at the weekend as we rent this house but I have always wanted to buy a townhouse.

Other half loves it as the kitchen diner is seperate and large enough for dining table etc.

My stepson sleeps on the 1st floor and us on the 2nd and have had no issues.

Yes it is a bit of a pain having 3 floors if you forget something but for us we like the layout we have.

Except for having 3 toilets to clean!!!

Agreed, but I've got the same problem in a tiny 2 storey 3 bedroomed house. It's great having 3 toilets, but the cleaning is a pain.

My OH had a 3 bedroomed townhouse with 4 toilets - 1 on the ground floor, 1 on the first floor and 2 on the top floor where there was a bathroom and an ensuite!
