British Gas free insulation (cavity wall and loft) - anyone had this done?
Had a man from British Gas knock this morning and he explained that as we were British Gas electricity customers we could get free cavity wall and loft insulation fitted. That was the only criteria, he explained that they had targets to meet to reduce energy and all customers were entitled to this. I think previously you had to be over 70 or on certain benefits so we would not have qualified, but they are now offering it to all customers.
Normally, we're quite sceptical of anything offered for free, we asked him loads of questions and there didn't seem to be any catch. We agreed to have a surveyor out to do a survey to make sure we're eligible. This will probably be done in September.
Has anyone had this done, is there any catch?
Thanks.

Hi there. Yep we signed up for this. I thought you had to be dual fuel customers but maybe they have changed criteria if not met targets. Anyways, we had surveyor out for cavity wall insulation. We already have loft partly insulated and partly boarded. The surveyor said if they did the loft, they have to put in so much insulation now that it would be too dense to put the boards back. So we went for cavity wall. He explained it all and drilled pilot holes to check house suitable. Told us may be a few months wait as v popular offer. After not hearing anything for few months, had letter from Mark Group - seems BG had to sub-contract out in my neck of woods (Surrey) so they came and did it. Very pleased. All pretty quick and painless and had various cetificates in post since so we have proof been done.
Hope that helps :j:wall:Trying to get a grip :think:0 -

Got my survey booked for middle of Sept for loft insulation as am a Homecqre customer (house not suitable for cavity wall insulation).
T&C's state that existing insulation needs to be less than 60mm - not sure how strictly they stick to this???0 -
I contacted British gas early last spring about the free insulation. They did the survey about 2 weeks later, very quick and not invasive.
I dont have cavity walls but the loft insulation was approved. They fitted that about 2 weeks later.
It took the men about an hour and they even fitted a seal around the loft hatch.
I noticed a massive difference last winter.
I would recommend this deal to everyone

If it`s deeper than 60mm they can bring it up to standard but it`ll be chargeable to you. The free offer is if the existing material is 60mm and below.:money:0 -
We applied for this, which turned out to be a complete waste of time, due to the position of our loft hatch the surveyor wouldn't even take a look, he said something about there having to be 5ft headroom when you enter the hatch and ours is about 4 as its where the roof slopes down:beer:0

Thank you all for this. I guess it's worth going for then. I'll have to pop my head into the loft and see if we have any insulation there at the moment. It's an area I've never really ventured into! Thankfully we've never really put any stuff into the attic so there's nothing to clear out.0

Hi I was considering this, but my loft has floor boarding with the fibreglass insulation underneath. does the floor boarding have to come up? Or can the new insulation be laid on top of the floor boards?
Thanks for your help.0 -

The loft needs to be at least 2/3rds open. They wouldn`t lay it above fixed boards.:money:0
