The drum of My Washing Machine Smells!

I had a similar smelly issue with mine after I did a DIY job and replaced the rubber seal. It transpired that I fitted the rubber seal upside down!
Water kept collecting at the bottom of the rubber seal, which was causing the smell. After looking at the rubber seal, I discovered the seal had a small drainage hole in it which should have been at the bottom of the seal (but I incorrectly fitted it with the drainage hole at the top) - Having the hole at the bottom of the seal would enable the water to drain out, thus stopping the collection of water that was smelly.
I removed the seal, and replaced it with the drainage hole at the bottom. The problem has now been solved.
I wonder if those of you experiencing these issues have had the rubber seal changed and fitted incorrectly in the past?
Funny that you should mention that, on mums machine there's a drainage hole, however, on ours there isn't a drainage hole?!
We've never replaced it but i'll ask my friend, whom we live with.
Do you think i should be able to replace the rubber seal? Was it fairly easy?:oGetting married 23rd June 2012!!:o0 -

Never used liquid, always powder.:oGetting married 23rd June 2012!!:o0 -
Being semantically pedantic, you are doing the smelling and it is doing the stinking...0

Try the maintenance tips including the service wash at 90 degrees with basic bio poweder and nothing inside and check and clean any filters that you can access. There are listed in teh second UKwhitegoods link above by kwatt final post
If you are still getting problems then check that the drains and drain hoses are draining away properly
Regular maintenance washes and not washing everything on short 30 degree cycles with non bio should help. It has nothing to do with the make or model0 -

I'm sure I used to work with you. Either that, or you are of similar semantic pedantic-ness! :rotfl:

My ex-lodger used liquid detergent and I began having this problem again with a new machine within a couple of months of her using it- she would do 4 loads a week though compared to my one.
White vinegar and soda crystals on the hottest wash eased it and cleans the machine. I do this about once a month or so now.
Avoid liquid detergent - that stops it - then a normal service wash is all that is needed.0 -

I found the website below while trying to fix a similar problem (sorted with soda crystals, as above). The man gives video tutorials for repairs on various appliances-this one is for an Indesit door seal - looks quite tricky to me, see what you think.

It was definitely not easy! Took me an hour to replace the d@m thing! But having the vent did cure the smell problem...0 -

You're unfamiliar with the use of smell as an intransitive verb?
Back OT. Are you leaving the door ajar when the machine's not in use? It's a good idea to do that if you aren't already.0 -
Right, well, on further inspection, we found the drainage hole in the rubber seal...at the 3 o'clock position!? Not Sure how its up there but we tried to move the seal round, and it didn't work.
Looked on Youtube last night about how to change the seal, seems fairly straight forward, and my OH is very good at all that stuff.
In the meantime, i'm going to try the white vinegar and soda crystals.:oGetting married 23rd June 2012!!:o0
