If (a big if maybe) the duty in the Netherlands is less than in the UK surely it would save you money?
  • KLM flights (because they transit at the ghost ship airport) are notorious for passengers having checks on goods. the customs officials are planned for set aircraft particularly far east

my brother got done 5-8 years back on a new digital camera from the far east. the next time he flew, once again all bags where checked. A cheap camera wasn't so cheap.

lesson always rip of tags for new purchases before entering europe and use them.

out of interest who gets to keep the VAT/Import Duty is it The Netherlands or Europe. If it is the netherlands as expected, its a nice little money spinner and creates jobs.

On a related note, people who visit the UK from outside the EU are supposed to be able to reclaim VAT on goods they buy here when they leave. If they change 'planes on the way back, they are supposed to collect their refund at their final airport before leaving the EU.

Now, what are the chances of the officials at Paris CDG handing out cash to a transit passenger as a refund for tax paid in the UK?
