I wonder how many of you lot spouting off about it actually have proper jobs. The likelihood is that most of you are on the dole claiming every benefit you can get your hands on and make your livings selling bent gear on Ebay.

Nope, not on the dole and selling small antiques bought at auctions - every penny traceable.

Debt-free, nearly mortgage free, newly self-employed after 9 years working for a major retailer (ending up as head of card fraud prevention for their multi-million pound-turnover website), never taken a penny in benefits, never will. All eBay profit declared and taxed.

Me neither. I started my business on eBay, every penny earnt is declared and now VAT registered so I'd rather be legit than not sleeping worrying about being done by the Tax Man. I have 2 kids to worry about and yes, this is a PROPER job for me and no I am not on the dole. It enables me to be at home with my kids while they are little instead of palming them off with everyone else plus keep my brain active and then when they are both at school I'll have a full time business to run!! And no, the gear I sell is not bent, it's all legit from some of the best selling UK brands!!

I pay MORE than my fair share in taxes and pay more in tax alone each year than many people's gross pay before tax deductions. My tax bill for last year (year start to year end) is just over £15k from my primary source of income.

I do find it amazing that someone who obviously earns as much as you do can be so uptight about paying tax.

(I say 'earn' although that is a presumption .. perhaps it's interest on your inheritance or something, but anyway ..)
    Enough for you there?

Nope! Good start, but I also expect to see you paying for your own waste disposal, repair of roads, library and museum visits, private security (since you clearly don't believe in your money subsidising the police), and fire service.
I pay more than enough tax as it is for very little in return and I most certainly won't be paying it twice

It's hard to know where to start with all the ego-centric nonsense you spout. Of course, we would all love to assess our own tax liability based on how much 'return' we perceive to be getting "in return" from it. Sadly (for you) it doesn't work like that. Next, being taxed on ebay income is not being taxed twice - you didn't get taxed on the profit you made on ebay to start with, so it's not "paying twice".

Oh, you'd just love that to be the case, wouldn't you? You obviously believe that you're the only person in the world that works hard, pays taxes and doesn't claim benefits. Shame it's not true. Anyway, don't let me disturb you .. you get back to doing the Telegraph crossword or whatever it was you were up to before before this little spat interrupted you!

What a load of rubbish! The IR won't even raise an eyebrow if you're not pulling £500 a month.

I'd love to know who told you this. The tax due on £500/month would be about £8, but that's if the eBay money is the only source of taxable income. Otherwise you're looking at about £150 (with NI thrown in). If you seriously think that HMRC would ignore this then you're off your rocker.
