Insuring Car For Parts Of The Year

Wondering if anyone has some advice.
I'm going to university this year and am undecided as to what to do with my car. I'm going quite a distance so i will not be taking it. Plus i do not want the running costs throughout the whole year.
I would however like to use it when i come home. My only concern is insurance. I will obviously be using it for a few weeks at a time. Will i be able to get insurance for just a few weeks?
If i do will i have to pay a hefty premium? Or is it cheaper to insure for a full year?
Thanks.

New rules have just come in, a vehicle must be kept insured unless declared SORN so if you are keeping it taxed and on the road it must insured at all times.

I realised that. i would obviously declare it SORN if it was going to work out too costly. Cheers though.0

Aviva do Short Term car insurance for 1 to 28 days.
Do you not need theft cover (for example) when its parked at home?0 -

If you aren't using it most of the year is there anyone else in your family who wants to use it?I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Some insurance companies suspend cover for periods but I believe there may be rules about the length of time between changes. Talk to your provider, would be my advise0

Personally I would not think it was worth the hassle of having to declare SORN each time you went away, possibly costing you a month's worth of tax each time when you have to cash in the tax disc for a pro-rata refund, then paying over the odds for a short term insurance policy. I cannot see that it would save you much in the long run, just get a basic low usage level of cover and keep it taxed for the full 12 months.
Even better, change the car for something small that does not cost much to insure and is in the free tax band.
i.e Band A : Up to 100 g/km CO2 = FreeThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks for all the replies. I've managed to do a deal with family member where i pay a third of the insurance and tax. I then get the car when i'm back from university.
Does anyone know who does car insurance where a named driver receives a no claims bonus as well?0 -
