oral flea treatment for cats what to buy

Options
hi all

my new kittens have fleas, only one or two i have seen but i treated one when i first got it as i knew it hadnt been treated but was told the other one had been treated.

now several weeks later they have fleas, after reading up on treatments it says that oral treatments are best for killing fleas and treating the new fleas that hatch from eggs as it is in the kittens blood stream then.

previously i have always used a pippete onto the skin so what can you recommend as an oral treatment please

The ones on the back of the neck are the best containing Fipronil. Such as Frontline, Effipro, Fiproline.

The pill containing Nitenpyram does work such as Capstar or Johnsons 4Fleas. It works within 15 minutes killing all fleas for 24 hours. But it's a daily pill or whenever you see fleas and it is expensive.

You must always wash bedding and use a household flea spray as well.

ok thanks, think i got a bit confused, was thinking of oral drops for some reason, will continue with the effipro then ,

they havent been upstairs in the rooms or anything as yet so im hoping there is no eggs up there.

will get a spray for the back roomm and have washed the throws in the living room this morning. will eggs live on wooden flooring or is it just carpets do you know?

    thanks for your reply. x

  • they live everywhere. and i mean every groove u can find. they are not that fussy. i would recommend treating the whole house as they may even travel on you. the house is 95% of the problem.

It can be a bit difficult to get them to take tablets sometimes so you may have to try hiding them inside a treat or if they sense that trick (as one of ours does) then just take the pair of them to the vet to get the tablets into them. We use Frontline for both of ours and have never had a flea problem. The same goes for worms. We dose with a pipette.

It's a pity there's no treatment available for catching mice - that's the infestation problem we have :D

ok so plan of action, just treat regulary with the drops on the back of the neck.

will get some spray for the rooms foors etc, and wash all bedding and cushions etc

i have only seen one flea on each yesterday but have had the kittens around 3 weeks now so if i do everywhere and keep up regular treatments hope fully that will keep them at bay. thanks again for replys. x

glyn you can always borrow my older cat she is great at mice and rat catching, regulary brings me gifts lol

Mirrorimage I have two. One 10 year old who is an accomplished mouser and a 13 month old who seems to be picking up the skill quite well. It's not so bad since we moved house but the older one managed well over 300 mice in 10 years at our last place.

i would take mice over fleas anyday, i would actually pay to have a mouse problem instead of a flea problem

once i stayed in a country house that had been uninhabited for a while, mice were rampant there, there was faeces everywhere: in the cupboard, on the floor in every room, even in the oven. it was everywhere. i could hear them under the bed at night.

i bought a load (8 or 10 or so) of mousetraps called "little nipper" iirc from a hardware shop (these ones are very sensitive and work very well for mice and won't break your toe when you step on them) and placed them throughout the house.

generally if i emptied the traps 3 times a day i would catch about 3 mice a day in each trap, (i tried non-lethal traps first but they were not as effective and the mice probably just came back in anyway.)

after a while the house was purged, no cat medication, no buying 10 cans of insecticide, just a few cheap mousetraps

compared to a flea infestation (which i currently have and which is utter misery), if you deal with it like i did, a mouse infestation is just a bit of fun
