HijackThis is a program to detect programs that may be manipulating your computer, similar to those zombie machines you may have heard about in the news.

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/programs.php

There is a link to HijackThis on that page. You can download and run the program, and it will tell you if there are any suspicious programs on your computer.

Of course, for internet security, also have a firewall in place, my personal favourite is McAfee.

For general system slowness, also check to make sure you don't have unnecessary programs starting up at startup, including programs with hidden processes such as update checkers and event loggers.

If you choose the option is HiJackThis that produces a log file. You can enter the logfile in https://www.hijackthis.de and it will analyse it for you :)

yes, download and full instructions here

    http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/

ignore the box at the top about Trojan hunter, you are looking for the download button on the left with a green flashing circle next to it

    then post the log here

Sorry to hijack this "hijack this" thread, but can someone tell me how to do this and what to look for? I vaguely remember doing it a year or so ago, but can't recall what i did - do you run msconfig.exe? My system is running very slow at startup after updating adobe. I also vaguely recollect reading somewhere about how to minimise the time adobe takes to start up by disabling addins - can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks,

msconfig will give you access to all the startup programs where you can disable some if you want by unticking the box

I would have thought the adobe Add-ins are in the options on the main Adobe program ??

you can remove Adobe from start up...it's only checking for updates !!

Some googling of the filenames/paths given in that report will give info on what they are and you can then decided what to do with them. One thing that caught my attention, I would disable the Nero (Ahead) services, unless you have a particular reason to keep them. I've always disabled mine, and have noticed no adverse effects.
