I've just moved from Bulldog to SKY and do you know what had exactly the same problem for 2 weeks.

It's a DNS cache/Microsoft protected file problem.

Avast Anti Virus, XBMC, Windows Update, side bar gadgets and a few other programs all would not connect. Whilst Firefox/Opera and everything else were all fine.

Tried starting stopping services flushing DNS nothing worked.

I'm on Vista 64x Ultimate with UAC disabled and SPYBot host protection.

Now the fact that some programs were accessing the internet via the new connection means that my computer network settings and my SKY adsl DNS were all fine.

So what could it be?

Now I solved it by accident by running I.E.

Note ~ I don't use I.E. except to access Comedy Central via a proxy program to watch the Daily Show/Colbert Report by passing the USA only restrictions.

When I ran it through the proxy program it didn't work. So I ran I.E. normally put in MSN.com and hey presto it worked. So then did everything else that didn't?

On reading this thread I did a quick google and it looks like to prevent hijacking by spyware viruses etc. Windows/I.E actually uses it's own protected files for storing DNS/Connection information that are separate/on top of those from your network card.

These files will not change until you log in with full access permissions (administrator account) and run I.E. which should repopulate them with the new connection settings.

Well that's my theory could be wrong?
