Wiring issues

I am having a few issues with a phone extension and hope someone can help.
Everything is fine with the master socket, in that it works. When I open it up it is wired as follows:
White with blue - 2
White with orange - 3
Blue with white - 5.
The remainder of the wires are knotted to tidy them up.
I understand that that is not the standard wiring but it works fine.
There is another telephone cable leading in to the box and those three wires are wound round those from the mains. I have followed the cable to its end, it is quite some distance and goes above a ceiling.
I have tried to wire my extension box as above as well as the standard wiring but am still not getting a dial tone.
Does anyone have an idea as to what might be the issue here other than a cable break? Any tests I could do to make sure the wires are intact?
I don't want to make any changes to the master in case it stops working.

3 is unnecessary. Just wire 2 and 5 (keep them the same way round).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
