Is my fridge broken, do I need a new one or can I fix it?

The problem with my fridge is, water pooling in the bottom. I dont know where all the water comes from (it seems a lot for condensation) and its costing me a small fortune in kitchen towel to mop it out each week (too much water for cloths). and it smells. its a home king fridge from coop that i bought about five years ago, its far from old and i dont want to replace it if its just something I'm doing wrong.
any ideas?
any ideas?

Is it a self defrosting one? (there is a drain hole inside the fridge and it collects in a chamber above the compressor and evaporates.
Have you checked the temperature of the fridge to see if it is working properly ?? (under or over cooling)
Is the door shutting properly?? (check the seals are intact and clean.

theres a sort of plastic bung in the bottom at the back that seems to be useless. i dont know if its supposed to be a self-defrosting fridge.
the temperature is fine
the door shuts okWins: 2008: £606.10 2009: £806.24 2010: £713.47 2011: 328.320 -
As above, there should be an open drain hole towards the base of the back of the fridge compartment...the water drains away via it through a tube into a tray located on top of the compressor where the heat from the compressor evaporates the water away. If you look at the back of the fridge you should be able to see the drain tube.
Usually when you buy a fridge there is a little plastic tool to clean out the drain hole...i'm guessing yours is actually stuck into the drain hole and is the bung you refer to.
no tool just some kind of plastic stuck in a hole. tried to get it out but its jammed solid.Wins: 2008: £606.10 2009: £806.24 2010: £713.47 2011: 328.320 -
The hole is designed to let the water drain down a small tube onto a dish over the compressor at the back of the fridge.
The bit of platic is to stop bits of old food rolling over the top of the hole and blocking it.
Usually litle bits get washed into the tube, grow mould and block it up anyway.
The easiest way is to pull the fridge out, turn it off, and pull the tube of if you can and clean it with a piece of wire, and put it back on.
You can pull the plastic out from the hole with a pair of pliers, and do it from the inside as well.0 -
