Tiny gap in insurance - could it affect no claims?

Hi all

I've just this week had to scrap my car. The insurance had automatically renewed on 11th August. I want to cancel the policy within the 14 days while they are "only" going to charge me fifteen quid for the priviledge.

However I haven't yet found and taken out insurance on a new car. I will sort that out in the next week or two, but strictly speaking would that mean the week or two that I'm not insured would cause my no claims entitlement to start from scratch again? I've never been asked to prove my no claims in the 25 years I've been driving, but I don't want to lose it when I can least afford to.

I hope that makes sense and I'd welcome any thoughts. Thanks.

It depends on the insurance company you choose to go with when you find your new car. You can go without insurance for at least 6 months and still use the same 'no claims' from your current insurance company. Some insurance companies will allow you to use a no claims discount that is up to two years old (co-op and esure used to).
  • I believe most ins co's allow a gap of up to 2 years.

Why not tell them you've scrapped the car and want to switch your existing policy to your new vehicle when you get it?

Because based on a quote they gave me the other day for a car I was interested in, I think that will work out more expensive than cancelling and then shopping around.

Thanks for the replies - it sounds like I should be fine to go ahead and cancel.
