To be fair though, thats your mum. Its not a 13 year old kid who'll be throwing it on the bed, dropping it on the floor when she forgets its on the bed and picking it up by the lid.

My eldest son amazed me with his ability to destroy a laptop and "I was only on facebook" was the usual response :rotfl::rotfl:

As for the old laptop, this may seem to be the wrong answer, but emptying all the files onto a seperate disk (Ideally a networked disk also known as a NAS) and adding some additional memory will probably fix it unless the problem is physical (fan gone or similar).

TBH, if the CPU is a Pentium-M 1.6GHz or faster, it isn't the wrong answer at all, even if the fan is gone as they're cheap enough to fix.
  • Are Lenovo and Asus goods brands?? I've allways went for Sony / Acer and was just wondering how they rack up. Do they use good quality parts inside and are they reliable??

Thanks for all your replys. My daughters laptop runs really slow, nothing loads, can not download and jack plug has gone.I know i could get it repaired but unfortunatly at the moment i am broke so looking for a buy now pay later option. She needs the computer for schhol as all her work is on the computer.By the way she does not ever hold it by the lid or throw it on the bed.
  • They have a £50 off laptops over £200 offer.

In your position I might look at Compaq Presario CQ56-252SA. You order on line and collect from a shop.

It isn't the most powerful machine in the world but has the Webcam that you want and will cost you £279 less £50 = £229.

You will pay extra for Microsoft Office although there is some sort of advert funded version which I think is free. Otherwise uninstall the software off the old PC and install it on the new one (if someone can get the old one to start).

Most of that could be fixed by reinstalling the operating system, there should be a restore CD if you've still got the box. The jack plug is another problem altogether, though.

Best option if you want one new is a netbook. They're small and usually come with built in webcams that are quite decent. The best, in my experience, are Asus EEE PC's - the latest model seems to be "1018P" - but HP and Dell do their own, too.

Well if a laptop is thrown around the room it doesnt matter if its a cheap one or an expensive one they will both be damaged
