Skirting Boards

Hi All,

Recently moved into a new build house, have not decorated for the last 6-8 months to give the house time to settle, I have decided to pick up the brush and begin to paint, but has anyone got any tips on how I can repaint the skirting boards without getting any paint on the newly laid carpets

How can I paint right down to the bottom of the board, when the carpet is down??

I have some of those lengths of plastic. I can't remember the name but they were sold specifically for the skirting board painting job. I think that what they are, is simply lengths of metal Venetian blind. They work quite well, but you cannot always get them to jam below the skirting board.

The guy who laid my last hall/stairs carpet noticed that I was left with a change of colours on the skirting boards because the new carpet was lower than the old. So I had about a centimetre of skirting board showing a different colour right above the new carpet level.

His advice was to put low tack masking tape on the new carpet, right up to the skirting board, then push the masking tape carefully down between the skirting board and the carpet edge.

He said, paint. Wait for it to dry and remove tape.

I'm lazy.......I've not done it yet so I can't tell you if this method works

Hi All

Thanks for all taking the time to respond it is much appreciated.

I will try all the methods in differing rooms, I will start to look for plastic blinds on-line am sure they will sell them in well known DIY shops

The reason for wanting to paint in a new build is because everything is white at the moment and this will be the first time I have painted, the reason for re doing the skirting boards is due to the fact that when I have been taking furniture upstairs it has caught on the banister, skirting boards and chipped it, so I will need to re paint the skirting boards and the doors throughout the whole house so I don't have any differing colour patches in certain places
