    Debt-free and Proud!
Well I had a fairly minor but important act of kindness the other day, and it was from a very young lady so glad to discover it's not just us oldies.

Was in a bar, left a bit early, when got home realised was missing my very new, and very expensive work blackberry torch.

Called it a few times, but nothing, at 7.30 was just coming back from the gym and had a call asking me if i'd lost a phone. Was a trainee lawyer who'd picked it up despite not knowing whose it was.

Bless her. She dropped it off at me, around 9am. Very kind of her. Of course, imagine the enjoyment in the office when she said to me 'your alarm woke me so early this morning'. Woops!
Debt free, moved, got new stuff for the new flat - got everything I wanted and need - now just saving.

    Just another thought.....

I think the people of Wooton Bassett have probably shown the longest act of kindness with the dignity they have shown to our fallen servicemen.

I am so pleased that this is being acknowledged by making them Royal Wootton Bassett.

I didnt realise this, I'm also pleased that its getting acknowledged!

    My own wee story...

I have been doing AVON for a while now and speaking to some of my customers and getting friendly with direct neighours (as we only moved here a year or so ago) and she mentioned that they would love a laptop as they didnt have any means of getting on the internet. I went home and cleaned up one of my old laptops and took it across, well she complained after a few days that it was running slow so the OH ordered extra memory off ebay on the promise that she would pay for it. I'm still waiting for that extra money, it wasnt much £20 odd quid but its the principal.

I then went across and admired one of her scarves that she had knitted, she then brought me one across and charged me £15 quid for it, I was a bit gob smacked but paid up.

My eldest even mentioned that she thought it would have been nice if she had given me it in place of the money she owed me, never minding the fact I gave her a decent ish laptop.

Never mind though, another day, another opportunity to make someone smile!

There is a lady down the road from us who has an overflowing pear tree in her garden. She has put a box of pears on her wall, with a notice saying 'Free, please help yourself'. This is lovely anyway, but what makes it so thoughtful is that there are some folded up carrier bags in the box too.

I love the big heartwarming stories, but the little ones help me make an effort each day.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.

Many moons ago.... I was about 14, I was due to go camping with Girls' Brigade when my dad was made redundant. We had already paid the £5 deposit but there was no way my parents could afford the other £45 (I caught them discussing selling a family heirloom to pay for it and told them off), so I went off to GB and told the captain that I wouldn't be able to go. Over that weekend, She rang my mum and offered to pay for me to go (which I did) She never told a soul. :A

I have to say, this is also the person that let my dad borrow her car to take me to several university interviews (not particularly random, but fantastic all the same) :D

I was driving home from a works appointment and happened to go through Wootton Bassett on a repatriation day, albeit around 12.00 noon when the procession was going to be 2.00pm ish. To see the old boys congregating with their medals on their blazers, mixed with school kids, and general shoppers already to take thier place to honour the fallen soldiers was heartwrenching, it wasn't planned, it just sort of happened. I did find the rows of TV vans a bit crass as they were there for the story rather than to pay respect. I was in tears driving though the town, and blubbed again when I saw some old boys getting ready to line the lanes in smaller villages between Lyneham and Wootton Bassett.

I've also heard tales of local people giving free accommodation to families for the "homecoming", and local hostelries giving exeptional cheap rates if not free B&B to immediate familes of the fallen.

I think there are lots of examples when you look
    1. I can remember as a child accepting a lift from someone when I was weighed down withschool bags and a heavy cooking basket - not recommended then or now but I was so grateful :D
    2. A friend helped me declutter my bedroom for a day shortly after we became friends - that was true generosity believe me! She came back to help me with the house after my operation too... :A
    3. When we first moved into a particular street - my DS was about 5 and was nagging for play dough but we had no money - and the next door neighbours turned up on the door step with some out of the blue.:j Our other neighbours gave us their DS's old action men - DS was completely made up.:j That year someone also paid a for a holiday for us - and someone gave us £400 to meet a bill we couldn't pay...
    4. We regularly give clothes away to friends or charity shop - and rarely have to buy any for the kids because we in turn are given so much for them :)
    5. I once crashed my car - and while waiting for the RAC to turn up - a lady let me in her house house for coffee and sandwiches. That was lovely of her as I was literally waiting for hours... I in turn told her all about MSE, cashback, competitions and how she could save a fortune :rotfl:
    6. One church I was with arranged to collect clothes from church people to donate for free on council estates in our area... I can remember thinking that this one kid was taking too much - and then realising that he had only taken a small fraction of what I'd donated from my one child. I then realised how blessed I was;)
    7. We went on a free holiday to scotland - thanks to MSE :money:competition and my DS lost his ipod on the way there - and when we came back it had been handed in to WHSmiths at a motorway services. We were completely gobsmacked and astounded. We never knew who had had handed it in. :T
    8. A friend took her DD shopping for her birthday - her purse was full of birthday money and she lost it right at the start of the day. She'd had her phone number in the purse and got rung up to say someone had found it complete with money still inside!:j
There are lots more stories we could all tell I'm sure

Every year I save for vouchers for Christmas. Every year I find I have one or two left over! (We cut down on buying for friends and family as we really don't NEED, rather than WANT 'stuff') So when I'm out and about in the shops, I look around for someone with a new baby or lots of children and give them a voucher and say 'Merry Christmas'!
It's worth it for the surprised looks I get.

    :)

I'm so pleased that there are kind and caring people out there.........

Reading some more of this thread today has reminded me of some other acts of kindness

When we were getting married for less than £2K in the early 90s - a millionaire visited our house by chance - he regularly acted as a chauffeur for visiting speakers... He saw the wedding cake my mum had made and asked what we were doing for a wedding car... We had planned to just use my dad's car... But he offered to drive his rolls royce for us instead which was white... The reception was a disaster - the caterer had only partially delivered and it was a nightmare but the millionaire drove us to a pub - and got us drinks and a sandwich and brought it out to the car on a sillver platter - Loads of the pub guests came out to watch - I think they thought we'd not got a reception planned at all! About 2.5 hours after the reception was due to start - the room was set up and guests had rallied round to help provide some food. What a blessing they were!!

Another time, my aunt died, I had lost my job over going to the funeral!!, and our two cars were beyond repair within a month of each other... We managed with a loan from MIL to replace one but not both. OH was running a very old motorbike around and freezing to death riding it in winter... He was helping out at a fundraising day at a charity where he works and got talking to some motorbikers in full leathers... He admired their bike, and got talking to them - and kind of said he was a biker if you could call his sorry excuse for an old bike a motorbike still. He went off to do some other work and a few hours later went back to help with the tour... They offered him their "old" BMW motorbike (worth more than our car).... We went to collect it and broke down on the way. They came to meet us - took me and the kids to their home, fed us, and fed OH when he eventually turned up. They took me and the kids to an icecream parlour while the bloke and OH tested out the bike. They were so generous and genuinely kind. They didn't seem super rich just really nice. They helped restore my faith in human nature and gave us a break in what was a truly tough year. (I posted about it in my diary at the time complete with photos of the bike)
