Thank you Tilly_Willow. I know it's going to be a long haul, but I'll be with him every step of the way. The support of family, friends, MSE-ers and even strangers who I know are sending DH healing thoughts from around the globe are a great help and comfort.
    Thanks again

GiJo..........so sorry to hear about your husband and wish you both well.
My husband has been in and out of hospital since beginning of May and as he was the 'veg' chap I'd not a clue but he just said keep on watering everything, pick stuff like beans/courgettes etc. so they keep growing (they haven't) and had to get potatos up as they were looking like a forest........poor french beans couldn't see daylight and now potatos are dug (poor crop) somethings eaten the french beans !
I did manage to find a local chap to give a hand who knew a bit more than me.........is there anyone in your locality who could help or is it just the potatos you're worried about ?
I would be unstoppable if only I could get started !

I keep my spuds in empty till roll boxes from Tesco. Easier to lift, stack and store than sacks.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Dig up the potatoes, compost or bin the used haulms (don't compost if the foliage is black), allow the potatoes to dry out then bag up in fabric or paper bags and keep in a dark place. Any that are damaged or have scabby skins won't keep so use immediately.

My mum had a stroke a couple of months ago. She is recovering well. Best wishes for hubby and yourself. The best healers are time, fresh air, good food and lots of love. x
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

I am so grateful for all the good wishes that you are all sending. I'll pass on your comments, especially about the chips - hopefully make him smile. Spuds are the only thing I'm having to think about, veg plot-wise. Mary-op, I hope your hubby is well on the mend and angelavdavis, I'm pleased that your Mum is recovering.
    Thanks again
