It sounds to me as if the electronic transaction failed, which the bank have confirmed, but I bet once the bank tell the shop they will contact OP and ask them to pay again.

OP by all means put the money in another account, but unless you can afford to pay for the bed again if asked to do so, don't spend it, for up to 6 years!

I have just had conversation with my Manager and she has informed me that you are more than likely not to get charged for the transaction.

    Thanks

The bank are confirming is that it's likely you won't get charged for the transaction, not you won't get charged for the bed.

  • i have the money and am more than willing to pay but as the shop havnt got a record of the transaction and the bank cant find anything either how can i pay?
there were other things bought at the same time not just the bed and iv got a bad memory so cant remember the exact amount owed..... the whole situation has become a farce :@
  • You've contacted them, informed them of their error and offered to try and pay again. I'd leave it there now, if they don't contact you for another means of payment it's their own fault.

It happened to me once with some sunglasses I ordered online-I rang 3 times trying to pay and they kept telling me I'd already paid, I kept telling them the transaction had failed at my bank, eventually I just gave up, sent them an email with my phone number so they could contact me when they wanted the money, they never contacted me!

I wouldn't spend the money, with such a large amount it's likely they will contact you for payment when they realise the error. Like one of the other posters said I would just move the money to another bank account so you have the means to pay if they do contact you and wait and see if they ever do.

It may not come to light until they have an audit/physical stock check when a bean counter is going through things.

Just hang on to the money for now. I would say, that even though they have 6 years, if it hasn't come to light within a year they're unlikely to realise.

  • just a quick update for you all ......both the bank and the shop have been in touch to say that they are sorry for the trouble caused and as it was their fault they will not be asking for the money.......i asked for this in writing and the letter arrived the other day.. just goes to show even big companies can be nice sometimes...thanks for all the help and advice
