Painting Nursery Furniture

We are planning for the arrival of our first child in December, and have been given a good quality cot from some relatives, however the cot is a pine cot, which does'nt go with the rest of our decor / furniture.
I'm considering spray painting the cot (hvlp spray gun) matt white. Do i need to use special paint? Or can i just print and top coat (water based gloss paint)
